“Lips were invented because words sometimes fail.”

What are your lips saying? We won’t be surprised if you mention your thin looking lips. It’s a concern regularly voiced by our patients. Below are the top seven lip augmentation questions we hear in our offices. Read on for more information on how to make your lips plump, restore that youthful look to your lips, and speak volumes.

Question 1: What causes our lips to thin?

For some, genetics play a part in causing naturally thin lips. However, others find that as they age, their lips begin to take on a smaller and deflated appearance. The culprit? Although the science behind these issues is complex, it all comes back to changes in our facial tissue – our skin and what’s beneath it. Our faces (including our lips) lose volume, plumpness and definition over time.

Question 2:  What treatment options are available to plump thin lips?

We choose the dermal fillers that are the safest and give the best results for a more youthful appearance. These fillers include multiple Juvederm products (including Voluma and Volbella), Restylane products (including Restylane Silk, Defyne and Refyne), and Belotero. They are all crystal-clear gels which are the same as a natural skin substance called hyaluronic acid.

Question 3: What is the lip augmentation procedure like?

Dermal fillers are administered by injection. This procedure is done in just minutes and usually requires no downtime for recovery afterwards. In most cases, your lip augmentation procedure can be performed during the same visit as your consultation.

Question 4: Will my lips look “natural” after my treatment?

Here at Drs. Cohen and Swartz, our approach is to always produce a natural result that makes your lips looks plump and youthful, not like you have had a treatment. We put an emphasis on healthy, natural-looking results through treatments that feel right to you.

Question 5: Is hyaluronic acid safe for lip injections?

The hyaluronic acid found in dermal fillers is not actually an acid. It is a “water-loving” molecule found naturally within the human body that keeps skin plump and hydrated. Hyaluronic acid adds shape and volume to your lips, but levels continue to decrease as skin ages. Our lip augmentation products containing hyaluronic acid are a soft gel that provide very natural and safe results.

Question 6: Is it safe to add Juvederm to lips with Restylane?

We often treat patients with both Juvederm and Restylane in the same area. Juvederm and Restylane are very similar products with slightly different characteristics that are advantageous in certain situations. It’s perfectly safe to use both products in tandem to create fuller, plump lips.

Question 7: What if I have second thoughts?

The dermal fillers used by Drs. Cohen and Swartz are reversible and can be adjusted very easily if you have second thoughts after the procedure. A touch-up or reversal can be performed with hyaluronidase, a medication that dissolves the filler.

One of the most important parts in your lip augmentation decision is to find an experienced cosmetic specialist. Drs. Cohen and Swartz have helped thousands of patients rejuvenate their appearance. The doctors take time to fully understand your needs and work with you to select your individualized lip augmentation plan. Once a plan is chosen, the doctors personally administer the treatments in one of their three convenient locations (Bala Cynwyd, PA, Voorhees, NJ and Center City Philadelphia).
