JUVÉDERM® is an FDA-approved dermal filler that is used to smooth lines, soften wrinkles, and give features like lips a plumper, more youthful appearance. It is an injectable gel composed of a substance called hyaluronic acid, which is a “water-loving” molecule found naturally in the human body.
Drs. Cohen and Swartz are experienced Philadelphia Juvederm doctors who were among the first in the country to use the product. They have helped thousands of patients rejuvenate their appearance with the filler, and they have been selected by the makers of the product to teach their technique to other doctors.
What is Juvederm used for?
Juvederm is most commonly used to:
- soften the “parentheses” around the nose and mouth
- lift and rejuvenate brows and upper eyelids
- enhance lips by adding fullness while staying natural-looking
- define lip borders
- soften “lipstick lines” around the mouth
- give noses more beautiful shapes and profiles
- smooth chins
- smooth skin wrinkles and acne scars
- provide fullness to earlobes and provide support to earrings when there is damage to the ear lobes
- straighten jawlines
- lift the corners of the mouth
- soften “marionette lines”
- add fullness to cheeks, temples, chins or wherever it is needed
- rejuvenate necklines
What varieties of Juvederm are there?
Drs. Cohen and Swartz offer multiple Juvederm products including Juvederm Ultra XC, Juvederm Ultra Plus XC and Juvederm Voluma XC. Each of these products contain lidocaine, a local anesthetic providing increased comfort during and after treatment.
Patients often ask about the differences between the products in the Juvederm family because they sound very similar. The main difference is the thickness of each formula and what it is used for. Drs. Cohen and Swartz choose between dermal fillers based on their patient’s unique attributes and desired look.
Juvederm Ultra XC
Juvederm Ultra XC has a thin consistency formulated with smaller particles. It is used more superficially in thin tissue to address moderate lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes, nose and mouth. Natural-looking results usually last 9-12 months.
Juvederm Ultra Plus XC
Juvederm Ultra Plus XC has a thicker consistency formulated with larger particles. It is used for deeper and more severe facial lines and wrinkles. Its results typically last 9-12 months as well.
Juvederm Voluma XC
Juvederm Voluma XC is slightly different from regular Juvederm products in that it has been FDA approved specifically to add volume to the cheek area. It is the thickest and most elastic product in its family. Although Voluma has many uses, it is especially good for adding volume to sunken cheeks, lifting the cheeks and creating contours for up to two years. This is currently the only filler approved for this use. To learn more about Voluma, visit our Voluma page.
Juvederm Volbella XC
Juvederm Volbella XC has been formulated with very small particles. It is used to addresses fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the lips. Volbella is also very effective with adding a subtle and very natural fullness to the lips. Learn more about Volbella from our Volbella treatment page.

What to expect
Drs. Cohen and Swartz provide a customized approach for each patient in order to ensure the best results possible. This customized approach starts in a consultation, where the doctors decide which treatment best suits your needs. In most cases, patients can receive their filler treatment in the same appointment as their consultation if they wish.
Every Juvederm procedure is performed personally by the doctors – not an assistant – to ensure that you are in the hands of leading experts in the field.
Treatments take about 15 minutes, and results are immediate. You may experience minimal swelling and bruising immediately following the procedure, but most patients need minimal to no recovery time. You will likely be able to work the same day, with natural-looking results!
Drs. Cohen and Swartz currently treat patients with Juvederm at their Philadelphia area offices on the Main Line (in Bala Cynwyd, PA), in South Jersey (in Voorhees, NJ), and in Center City Philadelphia, PA.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Juvederm work?
Juvederm is an injectable dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid – a substance naturally found in the skin. It can be used to fill lines on your face (like the smile lines between your nose and mouth) or it can add volume to areas that have flattened with age (like your lips or cheeks).
How long do these fillers last?
Depending on your metabolism and the area of your face that is treated, Juvederm usually lasts at least nine months. In certain areas, it can last much longer.
Who does the treatment?
In our office, all treatments are personally performed by either Dr. Cohen or Dr. Swartz – never by an assistant or a nurse.
Will Juvederm make my lips look too big?
Many people notice that, as time goes by, their lips look smaller than they did in the past. For these people, a light treatment of Juvederm does the trick. Juvederm is one of the fillers Drs. Cohen and Swartz use most for lip rejuvenation- both for adding definition to the lip edges and for adding volume to the lips. It can be used to enhance your lips to look naturally plump and youthful. Our approach is to always produce a natural result that makes you look younger and more attractive without looking like you’ve had a procedure.
Can Juvederm be used to treat people with any skin tone or color?
Yes. These fillers can be used in patients with very light skin, patients with very pigmented skin, and everything in between. The treatments do not cause hyperpigmentation or scarring in patients, including patients of color.
What if I do not like the results of my treatment, or there is an area that I do not like?
One of the major advantages of these fillers is that they are reversible. In the unlikely event that you are not happy with the results of your treatment, a touch-up can often be performed. If needed, the entire treatment can be reversed by injecting a safe medication, called hyaluronidase, that completely dissolves the filler.
What is different about Voluma?
Juvederm Voluma®, not to be confused with regular Juvederm, is a new FDA-approved filler designed specifically to restore the smooth curves to your cheeks. What’s even more amazing is that the results last up to two years!
Do the injections hurt?
Drs. Cohen and Swartz use tiny needles and Juvederm products that contain lidocaine to minimize pain and discomfort during and after treatment. Most patients report only slight discomfort during the procedure.
