JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® XC is an FDA approved dermal filler that reduces and smooths fine lines and facial wrinkles. It is an injectable gel that is made from hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the human body.
Volbella is special because it’s capable of doing two things really well. The first is treating the ultra fine lines that previous fillers could not. This means that pesky lipstick lines (sometimes referred to as smoker's lines) and other fine lines that were impossible to get rid of are now easily remedied.
The second application that Volbella excels at is subtly improving lip fullness. After a treatment, your lips will be fuller and smoother in a subtle way, achieving a beautiful “kissable lips” appearance.
Volbella has been approved in over 70 countries for years including markets in Europe, Latin America, Middle East, Asia Pacific, and Canada, but it has only recently been approved in the United States. Dr. Cohen and Dr. Swartz were among the select few to receive the first shipments of Volbella in the Philadelphia area, which means they are some of the most experienced doctors in the area with regard to administering this new product.
What is Volbella Used For?
Volbella is developed specifically for your lips and mouth area, but it works exceptionally well with all fine facial lines.
Drs. Cohen and Swartz use the product to:
- Smooth lipstick lines (also known as smoker’s lines)
- Subtle plumping and “moisturizing” of the lips
- Smoothing of the lips
- General smoothing of fine facial lines
- Additional smoothing after a Botox treatment
A study showed that 98% of people who had JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA® reported that their lip appearance goals had been achieved with results lasting up to 12 months

What Patients Can Expect
New patients at Drs. Cohen and Swartz always start with a consultation. For the consultation, you will have the option of meeting with either Dr. Cohen or Dr. Swartz. The doctor you choose will sit with you, discussing your needs, while working with you to identify the treatment plan that is best for you.
If Volbella is the best treatment for you, you’ll be able to receive the treatment immediately following your consultation, if you would like, which is the case for all dermal fillers at the offices of Drs. Cohen and Swartz. These treatments are always administered by your doctor, not a nurse, which ensures that you get the best care possible.
At the beginning of the treatment, patients have the option of opting for a numbing cream before the injection. Drs. Cohen and Swartz then use tiny needles to inject the Volbella. Treatments, which usually takes 15 minutes, and results are often visible instantly.
While the recovery time varies from patient to patient, most are able to return to work after receiving a treatment without an issue. Some patients may feel slight tenderness or experience minimal redness or swelling during the first 7-10 days following their treatment, but this is less common.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does Volbella last?
Volbella is one of the longest lasting hyaluronic acid dermal fillers available. Technically speaking, it lasts up to one year, but some patients may notice its effects lasting even longer.
What if I don’t like the results?
As mentioned, Volbella is made of a substance called hyaluronic acid, which is a molecule found naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid fillers have the unique advantage of being reversible with the use of a substance called hyaluronidase. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your results, Drs. Cohen and Swartz can use hyaluronidase to touch up or even completely reverse your treatment.
