Forehead and Brows
When our patients are concerned about the look of their forehead, they usually want to smooth away frown lines; get rid of forehead wrinkles; change the height and shape of their brows; or fill hollow temples.
Frown lines are the vertical lines that form between the eyes and extend into the lower forehead. They are sometimes called “the 11’s” (because of their resemblance to the number 11) or glabellar lines. Forehead lines, also known as forehead rows, are the horizontal wrinkles that are highlighted when we raise our brows.
Frown lines and forehead lines are common forehead wrinkles that most of us begin to notice in our 30’s. They come from making facial expressions that repeatedly bunch up our skin and cause “creases.” For some patients, frown lines can also cause small “dents,” or depressions in the forehead tissue, to develop.
The term “brows” refers to the eyebrows and the ridges that they sit on, which are composed of thick fatty tissue and bone. The brows often look droopy or flat as we get older because their tissue loses volume, or “deflates.”
Our temples experience a loss of fatty tissue as we age, too. This can make them look hollow, which contrasts with the full, smooth contours that we have when we’re younger.
Different treatments work better for different patients, but our recommendations to treat these four concerns typically include some of the same elements, which are described below. It is important to note that we work with all patients during their consultations to create a personalized treatment plan- there is no need to know which treatment you’d like to receive before visiting the office!
HOW TO GET RID OF FOREHEAD LINES
Like frown lines, we typically treat forehead lines with Botox. This treatment prevents the muscles responsible for lifting the brows up from pinching their overlying skin, which is the main cause of these horizontal wrinkles.

HOW TO CHANGE BROW HEIGHT AND SHAPE
Botox is a great way to improve the shape and height of the brows. This is an art mastered by Dr. Cohen and Dr. Swartz, who have treated thousands of patients. Also, because a loss of volume is what causes the brows to droop or flatten, we find that dermal fillers are another great way to restore their youthful height and shape. The specific filler used depends on the specific needs of the patient, but JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Restylane Silk are three of the most common.

When talking about brow height and shape, many patients ask us if we perform forehead lifts. Although forehead lifts are performed by many doctors, we prefer dermal filler treatments because of the way they treat the cause (lost volume), rather than the symptoms, of sagging brows. We also feel that they restore the brows to a more natural position for most patients.
HOW TO FILL HOLLOW TEMPLES
To restore the youthful fullness of temples, we use a treatment specifically designed to add volume to the face: dermal fillers. Depending on the patient, we may decide to use Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, or Restylane Silk.
